Here is an easy test to see if your recreational vehicle is covered by your homeowners policy: Are you having fun? If so, it’s probably not covered.
That isn’t always the case, but the protection provided by your homeowners policy is very limited.
You may have property coverage for owned “motor vehicles” that are not required to be registered for use on public roads. Also for vehicles used to service an insured’s premises or designed to assist the handicapped. If your home were damaged in a fire, your riding lawn mower and electric wheel chair would be covered. There’s a big gap for many other vehicles.
You may have liability coverage for the same types of vehicles covered by your property insurance. And just like with property coverage, your liability from using any other vehicle is limited. Liability arising out of the use of owned vehicles designed for use off public roads (ATVs, Power Wheels, dirt bikes, go carts, etc.) are covered as long as the vehicle is being used on an insured location. Your liability coverage often ends at your property line.
Golf carts that carry up to 4 people may have extended liability coverage to include their use on golf courses and in private residential communities that allow golf carts.
We see a lot of people in our communities using golf carts to travel locally – making a short trip to the grocery store or picking the kids up from school. Depending on your policy, there may or may not be coverage.
How do I get coverage?
The bottom line is, every policy is different and you should never assume you have coverage.
Always discuss these issues with your agent. They will be able to go over your policy in detail and lay out what coverage you have, and more importantly, what coverage you don’t have.
In some instances, getting coverage is as simple as listing the vehicle on your homeowners or auto policy. However, coverage is often limited for these types of vehicles and it makes more sense to issue a specialized policy.
